Rounding Numbers

Rounding replaces a number with the nearest multiple of 10, 100, or another named place. For positive whole numbers, a value exactly halfway is usually rounded to the greater multiple.

Words to know

round:
Replace a number with a nearby value that is easier to use.
nearest:
The value with the smallest distance from the original number.

Examples

  • 137 lies between 30 and 40 and is closer to 40, so 37 rounds to 40.
  • 282 lies between 80 and 90 and is closer to 80, so 82 rounds to 80.
