Number Lines

A number line is a straight line with numbers placed at equal distances. It helps you see how big numbers are and how far apart they are.

Your goals

  • โœ“You can use a number line to understand number order and distance.
  • โœ“You can use interval, distance correctly.
  • โœ“You can work out the value of each interval before counting jumps.

Words to know

interval:
The equal space between neighbouring marks on a number line.
distance:
How far apart two numbers are.

Examples

  • 1... 3 โ€” 4 โ€” 5 โ€” 6 โ€” 7 ...
  • 2To add 3 + 2, start at 3 and jump 2 spaces forward to land on 5.

Check these

  • โ€ข Do not count the starting mark as the first jump.
  • โ€ข Keep every number, symbol, label, and unit in its correct place.
  • โ€ข Show enough working to check how you reached your answer.

Helpful habits

  • โ€ข Read the whole question before choosing what to do.
  • โ€ข Show one clear step at a time and check each step.
  • โ€ข If you are stuck, draw a model, try smaller numbers, or revisit the example.

Now try your own

Create your own number lines example, solve it, and explain how you checked it.
