Perimeter

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. Add up all the side lengths to find it.

Your goals

  • You can measure the distance around a shape.
  • You can use perimeter, side length correctly.
  • You can include every outside side exactly once.

Words to know

perimeter:
The total distance around the boundary of a 2D shape.
side length:
The distance from one vertex to the next.

Examples

  • 1Rectangle 5 cm by 3 cm: P = 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 cm
  • 2Square with side 4 cm: P = 4 × 4 = 16 cm

Check these

  • Do not multiply length by width, which finds area instead.
  • Keep every number, symbol, label, and unit in its correct place.
  • Show enough working to check how you reached your answer.

Helpful habits

  • Read the whole question before choosing what to do.
  • Show one clear step at a time and check each step.
  • If you are stuck, draw a model, try smaller numbers, or revisit the example.

Now try your own

Create your own perimeter example, solve it, and explain how you checked it.
